3x3 Eyes - Review by logick

Yakumo is just another high school kid with an odd job. He is 16 and doesn't plan beyond dinner. That will all change when he literally runs into Pai on his way to work. Pai has been looking for Yakumo for the last four years, ever since she left her native land of Tibet.

Professor Fujii, Yakomo's father was obsessed with demon's and the supernatural, it was on one of his excursions in Tibet that he met Pai. Professor Fujii turned ill, and Pai took care of him. Pai was given a letter to give to Yakumo when she found him, from that letter Yakumo learns she is the last survivor of a race called Sanjiyan Unkare, an immortal and ancient race from Tibet. Pai claims to be nearly 300 years old.

The professor made a promise to Pai to make her human, the only thing Pai wants, but since he can not fulfill that promise, he sends her off to Japan to find Yakumo. To become human Pai, and now Yakumo, will need a special artifact called 'The Ningen No Zou' or 'Statue of Humanity'. The statue is being held in Hong Kong, and as a last request, Yakumo's father asks his son to take Pai to Hon Kong and turn her into a human.

After reading the letter Yakumo refuses to take Pai anywhere 'demons do not exist' he says as an image of tahuki appears on a special announcement broadcast on TV. Tahuki is a 'pet demon' that lives in Pai's walking cane. And off we go .... the hunt for 'The Ningen No Zou' has started.

3x3 Eyes is 7 episodes in total, and every minute of every episode has you glued to your screen. The characters are genuine and deep, they develop as the story developes. The story is never obvious and you are always asking yourself questions, who is Pai ? what are the Sanjiyan ? who else is after the Ningen No Zou ? why ?

3x3 Eyes is one of those shows where everything makes sense, but at the same time you are totally oblivious as to what is going on. Everything you watch means something, everything that happens, happens for a reason. Yes, you can watch it several times and pick up something new each time you watch this show.

The style of anime is beautifully classic, detailed and extremely scenic. The characters are portrayed as realistic as possible, no overdone curve lines, funky hair or other staples that are associated with anime. Boring to some I suppose, but to me it was a welcome change. It is obvious that the creators of this show had a story to tell, and they did!

Every now and then Pai's second personality comes out in the form of a 3 eyed Sanjiyan (hence 3x3 Eyes) her second self, or her real self ? Pai, the shy , cute teenage girl has no idea of what power resides inside of her. All she knows is that she is a Sanjiyan, and she wants to become human. What is means to be a Sanjiyan, she has no idea.

As time goes on, Yakumo finds himself drawn to Pai more and more, and not just as friends. The emotional rolercoaster for this 16 year old is immense, is Pai Pai ? who is this Sanjiyan ? what will happen to her once she becomes human, and what if she doesn't ?

I can tell you a lot more about the story, and if I do, you will want to see it asap, but I wont, this show is full of surprises, and it is meant to stay that way.

I have about 15 shows in my personal Top 5, but this one is definitely in the top 2.
