Every now and then an anime rises among its peers to stand out as an example of good anime. Scyred would be one of those anime. The Scryed world consists of a cataclysmic disaster that caused huge earthquakes in japan. A large area was split off from mainland japan and was called the forbidden land. A Large City was later built in the forbidden land that houses the comforts that one might expect in a modern city, but the vast majority of the island is sort of a cyberpunk fallout zone, where only the strongest survive. The event that created the cataclysmic upheavel, its origins are unknown and has brought great fear to the remaining people in mainland japan. They have since forced a restriction of movement between the island and the mainland.

Mainland "Japan", has created HOLD - The governing body of the forbidden land, But its power resides mostly in the city. HOLY - A Division of Hold, it consists of native born Alter's to capture and control the freelancing Alter's outside the city walls in the name of law and order. It seems one in a hundred born there achieve a power called Alter and are called Alter Capabalists. This ability grants them the power to assimiliate nearby objects into a form, or power that suits them best. So its entirely possible for some Alter's to have physical abilities like "growing tanks to fight for them" to others that have purely mind based powers.

I found the series to have great depth in its storytelling. Though the themes themselves arent unique, overall the package it was put together extremely well. The dramatic moments, mixed in with the fighting, blended in flawlessly to create a very polished product. Recently I havent been to impressed with the storywriting and implementation of it in other series but scryed definently is bucking that trend. The artwork in Scryed is definently top notch, it is very clean, and the movement is smooth throughout. The characters are all drawn with exacting detail as are the backgrounds and effects. The music is also very well done, the beginning theme is catchy with great music being used throughout the series for ambiance. Overall the Music and Sound effects would be marked as very high and well thought out. Overall Scyred may not be your favorite anime of all time, but it should be one of the better ones.
