DigiSub - Step 1 - Ripping the audio stream

Since it will be a lot easier and accurate we will be timing our subs from a wave file. You will need Vdub to get the wave from your movie. Follow the steps below to rip a wave that SSA will accept (it is rather picky so make sure you do exactly as explained here).

Step 1 Load your movie into Virtual dub and from the audio menu select conversion.

Step 1.1 Sampling rate doesn't really matter, Precision must be 8-bit and channels must be set to mono.

Step 1.2 From the audio menu select compression.

Step 1.3 Select the <No compression (PCM)> from the list of codecs, we do not want to compress our wave since SSA wont accept any for of compressed waves.

Step 1.4 Make sure that AVI Audio (your audio source is your avi/movie) and Full processing mode are selected (direct stream copy will do just that, and ignore all your settings)

Step 1.5 All settings are in place to save our wave and get ready to do some subtitling. From the file menu select save wav and put it somewhere convenient for you.

We now have a wave file that SSA will accept. You will see that this will save you hours and hours Vs playing your movie in a movie player and writing down the times when certain things are said. This is also a helluva lot more accurate.

Go to step 2 - Creating an ssa subtitle file.
